Authorities have identified 18-year-old Bradley Scott Sayer as the suspect arrested following a deadly shooting at a public library in Chico, California, that left two adults dead and a child injured.
The tragic incident unfolded Monday evening at the Chico branch of the Butte County Library, prompting a massive response from local law enforcement and emergency personnel. According to the Chico Police Department, dispatchers received multiple 911 calls shortly after 5 p.m. reporting gunshots and screams coming from inside the library. Police arrived within minutes and entered the building as terrified patrons sought safety.
As officers moved into the library, the suspect allegedly attempted to flee through a rear exit. However, additional officers had already established a perimeter around the building and took him into custody without incident. Authorities later identified the suspect as Bradley Scott Sayer, a resident of Chico. He has been booked into the Butte County Jail on suspicion of two counts of murder.
Police confirmed that two adults were killed during the shooting. Their identities have not yet been released as officials work to notify family members. A child also sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where authorities said the injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Chico Police Chief Billy Aldridge described the event as a devastating tragedy for the community. During a press conference, Aldridge said investigators believe the suspect acted alone and that there is no continuing threat to the public. Authorities have not disclosed a definitive motive for the attack, and investigators continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses.
The shooting occurred while the library was open to the public, sending patrons and staff scrambling for safety. Following the incident, streets surrounding the library were temporarily closed, and a family reunification center was established for those who had been inside the building. Law enforcement officers remained at the scene for hours as investigators processed evidence and examined the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The Butte County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are assisting Chico police with the ongoing investigation. Authorities said they are reviewing evidence, surveillance footage, and witness statements to determine what led to the deadly incident. At this time, officials have indicated there was no known connection between the suspect and the victims.
In response to the tragedy, all Butte County library branches were closed Tuesday. County officials expressed condolences to the victims, their families, library staff, and everyone affected by the shooting. Community leaders and state officials also offered support to the city as residents grapple with the shocking act of violence.
Governor Gavin Newsom expressed sympathy for those impacted and thanked law enforcement officers for their swift response. Local officials similarly praised first responders whose rapid actions helped secure the scene and prevent further harm.
The investigation remains active, and authorities are urging anyone with information related to the shooting to contact law enforcement. Additional details are expected to be released as detectives continue their work.
